At ECS Tutoring, we are not advocates of assessments or tests that place unnecessary pressure on children for any reason. However, the only “tests” we offer are short, low‑stress, standardised assessments used purely as data‑gathering tools when a clearer picture of a child’s abilities and needs is required. With so many parents fighting to secure the right support for their children and navigating the challenges of the EHCNA process - often being asked for evidence at every stage - these assessments can provide helpful, objective information. The resulting standardised scores and reading, spelling, or maths “ages” can be used to support applications for further help, referrals, or diagnostic pathways, without placing additional strain on the child.
We present all assessments in ways that suit the individual child, often through playful, game‑based activities and always in a calm, low‑pressure environment. This is why an initial consultation with the parent, carer, and/or SENDCO is so important. We welcome enquiries from local educational settings, as these conversations help us understand the child or young person’s needs, interests, and any factors that may need to be considered. With this information, we can tailor the assessment experience so it feels supportive, accessible, and genuinely reflective of their abilities
Short, one‑to‑one assessments used to measure a learner’s reading accuracy, reading age, and understanding of written sentences. They involve the child reading graded sentences aloud, followed by simple comprehension questions to check literal understanding, vocabulary, and inference. The tests are quick to administer and provide standardised scores that show how a learner compares to national age expectations.
Short, standardised assessments designed to measure a learner’s spelling accuracy and provide an objective spelling “age.” The tests involve spelling graded word lists that increase in difficulty, allowing us to identify strengths, gaps, and patterns in a child or young person’s spelling development. Because the tests come in parallel forms, they can be repeated over time without the learner simply remembering the words, making them useful for tracking progress. They are quick to administer, low‑pressure, and offer reliable data that can support applications for additional help, referrals, or diagnostic pathways.
Short, one‑to‑one assessments designed to give a clear picture of a child’s early Maths understanding. They explore key foundational skills such as number recognition, counting, early calculation, and basic problem‑solving, using practical, child‑friendly tasks. The tests provide standardised scores and a numeracy “age,” helping to identify strengths, gaps, and areas where additional support may be needed. Because they are hands‑on and low‑pressure, they are suitable for younger learners or those who may find traditional written maths tasks overwhelming. The results can also be useful as evidence when seeking further support, referrals, or diagnostic pathways.
